Spiritual Practice

Spiritual Practices for Political Engagement
by Corinne McLaughlin

SUPPORTING POLITICAL CANDIDATES OR ISSUES:

bullet

Examine and purify your motives for supporting a particular candidate or issue

bullet

Eliminate personal desires such as greed, as well as fear or anger from your political decisions

bullet

Observe with detachment – do not become emotionally attached to personalities or to particular outcomes

bullet

Be willing to listen with an open mind to those with different opinions

bullet

Separate people from their politics – respect the person; disagree with their politics

bullet

Examine your ego-identification with a particular political view or opinion

bullet

Develop flexibility of thinking

bullet

Practice goodwill and loving kindness especially towards those with whom you disagree

bullet

Avoid self-righteousness and emotional judgment of others

bullet

Assess which candidate will most effectively relieve suffering, transform ignorance and serve the greatest good of the greatest number

BRINGING SPIRITUAL VALUES INTO INSTITUTIONS:

bullet

Clarify your purpose for doing this work

bullet

Educate yourself on the real needs and issues of the organization

bullet

Follow your inner guidance

bullet

Be flexible and respond to opportunity

bullet

Be relevant and use bridging language, not jargon

bullet

Leave your ego at the door – be detached from power and recognition and be willing to give others credit

bullet

Focus on ideas – this is the causal level that creates effects in the world

bullet

Adopt a leader spiritually -- support him or her inwardly through prayer and meditation

bullet

Develop greater cooperation with other organizations doing similar work
